Making the most of the power of the sun

Another view of Oakley Wood where we’ve been working recently, this time in the glorious evening sun at the top of the picture while, in the lower part, you can see the composting operation in our yard which we undertake for Melcourt, who make a range of composts for commercial growers and for amateur gardeners.

What we’re composting is the bark fines and sawdust which arise out of the milling process. Rather than waste it we turn it into something useful: a peat-free compost in which other trees and plants will get their start.

Since we’ve had such a fine streak of weather it’s worth reflecting on the part the sun plays in our process. Energy from the sun makes the forest grow in the first place. The sun helps power our mill through a vast array of solar panels on the mill rooves. And the sun will give the new plants the energy they need as they start off in Melcourt SylvaGrow® and similar Melcourt products.

At every stage of the process: forestry, sawmilling, and the production of co-products like compost, we’re using renewable resources and creating jobs in rural areas. We’re proud to be a part of that!
