A new Co-op store for Bishop’s Castle is on the way – but first we have to clear the site

An exciting proposal to build a new Co-op store on land we own on the edge of our sawmill has passed all the planning hurdles and work has started on the demolition of the empty building which stands on the site. Local people will know the building as one that stood behind the old Countrywide Warehouse Store on Station Road which was demolished 10 years ago.

The new single-storey 420 square metre building will also include a cycle store, cash machine, Amazon locker and 11 car parking spaces which lies between the Public Hall and Bishop’s Castle Railway Society’s Weighbridge building.

The current Co-op store in Church Street, which employs 13 local people, is felt to be too small and unsuitable for modern shoppers needs – not least because of parking problems. It is anticipated the new bigger store will create more employment opportunities for local people.
